A Little Bit About What We're Doing

at TheCoolestStuffinTexas.com
The Coolest Stuff in Texas is a website started by a few Texans, dedicated to seeking out and writing about what makes the great state of Texas, well… great.! We’ll work to find all that Texas has to offer and share the best of it with you.

The website launched only a few month ago, but the response from readers has been phenomenal.

Our Kickstarter Video

This video will tell you a little bit more about what we are doing with the bus and why we decided to launch a Kickstarter campaign. See if you notice anything strange about Hayden’s beard.

What Up With the Bus?

We have launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to cover the final costs needed to get our bus out on the road to cover the stories, events, people and places that you need to know about.  The bus functions as a mobile headquarters for The Coolest Stuff in Texas.  Below you’ll find some of the features that make the bus an integral part of bringing you insider info on the Coolest Stuff.

Lodging

Before, while travelling, we wouldn’t always know where we would end up for the day. We would search for friend’s with couches, shell out money for hotel rooms or sleep in the car.

ON THE BUS...

there are two bedrooms and can sleep up to six people. This saves us time, money and will keep us from having to make a detour to find a place to sleep, keeping us on track wherever we might end the day.

WIFI

Before the bus, we would have to stop moving to find coffee shops or rest stops with free wifi to upload our articles or work on the site.

ON THE BUS...

we will have our very own wifi allowing us to update the website and post articles and videos immediately.

Mobility

Being in a small car to get around greatly limited the distance and amount of time we could spend on the road.

ON THE BUS...

we will be able to sustain ourselves out on the road for long periods at a time. This will increase the number of posts and the variety of the content we are able to bring to our users.

WORKSPACE

A story can quickly grow stale inside your brain waiting to come out. Sometimes we go to 3 or 4 locations per day to write posts about.

ON THE BUS...

Instead of waiting to get off the road for the day to write or edit posts, the workstations onboard will allow us to write posts immediately, even while en route to the next

Designing the Bus

Here at CSTX we are dedicated to seeking out and sharing the coolest things to do throughout the State of Texas. This requires an incredible amount of time out on the road. When we first launched, our main form of transportation was a tiny car we crammed into with all our gear. There was just not enough room for all of us. We would sleep in hotels, on friend’s couches, sometimes even in the car, and this also became a problem. Furthermore, when we were ready to write or upload posts to the site we would drive around hunting for free Wifi to hijack so that we could work on the site.  If we want to be able to sustain statewide travel while constantly being able to update CSTX with content, then something had to change.

images of bus designs

The bus will be a fully interactive part of CSTX and requires help from everyone involved to keep the momentum going. We want YOU as the reader to decide where the bus should go next and what we should cover on the road. You will be able to follow us through pictures, videos, blog posts, and podcasts as we journey across the State. We are doing 100% of the conversion construction ourselves and we invite everyone to follow the progress as the bus comes together. It has been quite the adventure so far and we are so excited to share with the world The Coolest Bus in Texas. We would like to offer special thanks to everyone who has already helped get us to where we are now.  Without you, the coolest Texans, there would be no Coolest Stuff to write about.  Please be sure to follow our progress as we get ready to take The Coolest Stuff in Texas to the next level.

We searched high and low for a vehicle that would get us around the State while allowing us to operate the website… and keep us in style. This is when the light bulb went off and we began our search for the perfect bus.  After months and months of research into buses and bus conversions, we found our baby. Previously a Dallas city transit bus (D.A.R.T.), this bus had exactly what we needed in order to start from scratch and build out a mobile headquarters designed specifically for what we need on the road.

We designed the bus to have two bedrooms, a bathroom, shower, a full kitchen, and places to work. The bus will be fully equipped with Wifi so we can provide our users and readers with instant updates on what is currently The Coolest Stuff in Texas.

Pics From the Bus Build

Evan Installing Skylight

Evan installing the plexiglass skylights. When the rooftop AC was removed, it left 3 large holes in the roof. This turned out to be convenient as the skylights let in lots of light.

Working into the night to frame the walls for the bathroom, shower, and bedrooms.

Ben measuring the dimensions for the shower walls. We had to customized every single aspect of the buildout to fit things where they would go in the bus.

Evan taking off AC unit from the top of the bus

Evan taking off the 2,500 lb industrial A.C. unit from the top of the bus. It had too much power for us and would weigh us down on the road. This turned out to be a much bigger project than we originally expected.

Looking toward the back of the bus after it was gutted. The seats, floors, and ceilings were removed, and new floors were installed. Layouts were drawn on the floor in chalk before framing started.

When we got the bus we had to install reinforced floors in the bays to hold all of our tanks. The black one holds waste, the middle one holds greywater (used water), and the far right one holds fresh water.

Installing Plumbing

Evan installing some of the plumbing that runs from under the bus to the sink and shower. These drain pipes run through the floor to the holding tanks in the cargo bay underneath the bus.

Ben and Hayden installing the shower. They are both too tall for the shower. If you see them out on the road, know that only the bottom four feet of both of them is clean.

All of the walls laid out on the side of the bus to dry. We used a blue, transparent stain on the walls so that the different wood particles in the OSB show through.

girl sanding wood

Adrienne is sanding one of the walls for a nice smooth finish, then to be stained and covered in two million coats of polyurethane.

Evan hanging out with the new countertops we built to hold the sink and oven in the kitchen. These will be stained and finished to match the floors.
Hopefully both the sink and the stove will be functional.

Evan is spraying polyurethane on the walls so they will be bright and shiny and smooth and shiny and bright.
